After more than twenty digital transformation in retail projects, the following five lessons appear in almost every failed engagement — and are entirely preventable if you know them in advance.
Lesson one: no internal champion equals a dead project. You need at least one person on the client side committed to driving the project at the management level. Without this person, every decision is slow and every issue escalates into a crisis.
Lesson five (the most important): don't try to optimize too early. Let the system run for at least four to six weeks in a real environment before deciding what needs to change. Real data always reveals things that theory cannot predict.
